New Part-Time/Contract Graphic Designer and Illustrator Role

PART-TIME/CONTRACT
VISUAL DESIGNER AND ILLUSTRATOR 

Position summary:

The Visual Designer / Illustrator will join the Marketing and Creative Team to contribute design work for Reuben’s Brews. This position will be responsible for creating illustrations and designs that are consistent with our brand, sometimes from existing assets but often from the ground up. Your work will consist of a fun and full spectrum of projects from tasting room event posters to beer label designs, and everything in between. You will be our in-house illustrator and designer, which is a great opportunity to grow your skills and vision, while helping us grow ours. The successful applicant will have a strong and creative portfolio of visual design work featuring some of their own illustrations. The Visual Designer / Illustrator will report to our Marketing Manager and will be based at our brewery in Seattle two days per week to start. This is an entry-level role, ideal for a freelance designer, with the potential for increasing or full-time employment in the next year or more as we continue to grow and design needs expand.

About us:

Reuben’s Brews is a fast growing, family-owned brewery located in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, WA. Since opening in 2012, our beer has won over 200 medals including Gold medals at three of the last four Great American Beer Festivals.  We have a 15 BBL brewery and taproom, as well as a 5 BBL small batch brewery, an expanding sour and barrel program, and have just begun brewing at our new 30BBL production brewery.

The role:

To achieve the goal of improving our design voice both in the marketplace and in our tasting rooms, the successful candidate will:

  • Work closely with the Marketing Manager to define the scope of upcoming design needs, develop strategies and specific proposals for design challenges and projects, and execute these projects from inception to completion

  • Collaborate with the Marketing Manager, Leadership Team, and our brand/design agency to grow our brand’s vision and designs

  • Create compelling and creative designs and illustrations that follows our brand’s voice while pushing our creative boundaries

  • Use a variety of digital and analog tools to create compelling, creative, and consistent designs and illustrations that will be utilized in our taproom, social media, packaging, and POS

  • Always deliver projects on-time and with an excellent attention to detail

  • Deliver projects to exact pre-press specifications, depending on the project

  • Contribute to, and lead at times, our creative discussions within the company

  • Understand and embrace Reuben’s beers, which includes developing and maintaining a detailed knowledge of the differences, and similarities, between our brews, our design, our methods and Reuben’s as a whole and those of other craft brewers and mass-market beer producers

  • Live the mantra “Bloody Good Beer!” – good isn’t good enough, our beer needs to improve every day – continual improvement needs to be engrained in our culture

Qualifications required:

  • At a very minimum to be considered, you must have:

  • An exceptional portfolio that showcases your visual designs and graphic illustrations, ideally showing strength both in print and digital projects

  • Ability to work on-site two days per week to start, with potential to move to full time in the future

  • A college degree or equivalent experience

  • 1 or more years experience in brand-focused design

  • Professional proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)

  • Excellent communication and project management skills

  • Experience managing multiple projects at once, including demonstrated ability to multi-task and firmly adhere to deadlines

  • Openness to iterative design principles and constructive feedback in a fast-paced and detail-oriented environment

  • A strong interest or passion to be involved in the craft beer industry

  • A detailed knowledge of the beer industry, including a strong knowledge of Reuben’s (preferred)

  • Ability to work flexible hours/days when required

In addition to these minimum requirements, we expect the successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • An in-depth passion for the science and art of beer

  • Infectiously enthusiastic and can-do attitude – a thirst to learn, to teach others, and an obsessive commitment to our brewery’s success is an absolute must

  • A “until the job is done” work ethic – flexibility to work non-standard hours when the need arises

  • Impeccable judgment, professional maturity, and integrity. An ability to be focused on details, as well as the bigger picture

  • Motivated, self-starter attitude with a resourceful nature

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, effective time management

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to earn the trust and support of a capable team
